Is Google+ the Next Big Social Media Platform?

The Facebook vs. Google Showdown

After the horrible failure of Google Buzz and Google Wave, the search engine giant is at it again with its limited invitation-only release of the new social media platform called Google+. Now the question is whether it will become a legitimate rival to the established platforms of Facebook and Twitter or if it is doomed to the same lackluster fate of its predecessors.

If there is one thing Google is doing right this time around, it is the new feature called “Circles,” which has become the focal selling point for Google+. These Circles will allow users to pick and choose what information they want to share with their different circles of friends, which is a direct response to Facebook’s biggest flaw: privacy.

On Facebook, your friends, family, co-workers, and a whole host of people you may have only met once in our life are all assorted in the same friends list. Having this eclectic group of people all with equal access to a user’s profile might cause someone to think twice about what content they put out, and in some cases might result in some pretty awkward moments like this:

On the other hand, Google+ has managed to frustrate potential users with its exclusivity during the trial period, and it has even shut out some people who already received invitations as they already reached their capacity.

Google+ could revolutionize social media with these great new privacy precautions and a new group video chat feature, or its invitation-only trial policy might frustrate potential users to the point that they decide to just stick to Facebook.  Tell us what you think in the poll below!
